Are you one of those fanciers that had the privilege to grow up in Utah and be part of a great organization such as the Utah Pigeon Club? If so, you would have witnessed its rich history and the many contributions it has made to the American pigeon hobby. For over one hundred fourteen years, the organization has withstood the test of time. We could only imagine the great triumphs and challenges that the U.P.C. experienced during its existence. Nevertheless, the club was blessed with many great breeders and leaders who united and enriched the pigeon hobby in its home state. Their contributions and advancement in pigeon breeds have been significant. The Oriental Roller was one of many breeds that become part of its history and mainstay.
Similarly, the United Oriental Roller Association has a long history that dates back to 1981 and was founded by Jim Green, Dale Husband, Ed Bills and Jerry Ohrn. The inspiration of formalizing an association dedicated to the Oriental Roller was a no brainer as Utah is a hot bed for the breed. Even though the breed was not rare, it only had a small group of dedicated breeders throughout the country. There were other Oriental Roller clubs in existence but they never reached the success that the Utah breeders accomplished. The breed’s popularity exploded and membership grew leaps and bounds. The U.P.C. has had a close relationship with the U.O.R.A. since its inception. The premier show has been the main show case for the Oriental Roller with record breaking entries of over 300 birds. Many times, the Oriental Roller was the largest breed entry of the entire show yet all good things come to an end and so did the reign of the Oriental Roller. Although, the United Oriental Roller Association has experienced its challenges due to exchange of officers and decline in breed popularity nevertheless the breed has withstood the test of time.
Today, the U.O.R.A. is made up of new officers, including two original members and other veteran breeders. The officers are progressive and goal oriented with great plans to bring together like minded fanciers who want to preserve what the founders of the club set out to do forty one years ago. Its new officers understand that the hobby and breed need a new and progressive approach while not compromising what the founders envisioned as the Show Oriental Roller. It is vital to continue making progress and improvements in the area of color, refinement, education, judge’s training, and producing informative newsletters with articles written by experts in all facets. The U.O.R.A. is committed to the preservation of the Oriental Roller as a flying, performing breed and will continue to support their exhibition and standard. The United Oriental Roller Association is committed to providing a respectful and family friendly atmosphere where members are provided the essential tools necessary to succeed. - George de la Nuez
Likewise, the new UORA has chosen to fully support the Flying Oriental Roller as well, recognizing both currently published standards (Oriental Roller and Flying Oriental Roller) in the 2024 National Pigeon Association Book of Standards. Together, we can make the Oriental Roller, no matter the type, a mainstay of future shows across the country!
